Gassers, quotable and a look ahead following the Broncos’ Week 7 17-14 loss to the Browns.
Gassers
Broncos coaches
The Broncos were totally out-coached in the opening phases of the game. Head coach Vic Fangio, defensive coordinator Ed Donatell and the defense were on their heels on the Browns’ five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the opening possession. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s play-calling was uninspiring (again) as Denver managed just 76 yards and two first downs on 16 first-half plays. And it’s Fangio’s job to make sure the Broncos match the intensity of their opponent. That’s not happening.
Broncos run defense
The Browns entered Thursday with the NFL’s top ground attack at 168.5 rushing yards, but were without top tailbacks Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt due to calf injuries. Right tackle Jack Conklin was also inactive due to injury. Even so, the Broncos couldn’t contain D’Ernest Johnson, who rushed for 146 yards on 22 carries (6.6 average) with a TD in his first NFL start. Johnson shred the Broncos’ defense with an array of broken tackles, plus impressive accelerations to turn small runs into bigger chunks. He also had 22 yards receiving.
Quotebook
Vic Fangio on the loss: “We didn’t play good defense tonight. We let them drive it too much. Way too many third-and-ones. We didn’t play well enough to win the game.”
Fangio on Cleveland’s game-clinching drive in the fourth quarter: “We were loaded up for the run, and they blocked us and ran it. We couldn’t stop them.”
Fangio on the decision to play Teddy Bridgewater despite foot and quad injuries: “I don’t think Teddy’s injuries, from my vantage point, affected him that much.”
Bridgewater on missing wideout Jerry Jeudy, who is expected back against Washington after missing six games with a high ankle sprain: “He brings a different type of energy to this offense.”

Record: 2-4
Week 7 game: at Green Bay, Sunday 11 a.m.

About Washington: The Football Team has a tough road matchup against surging Green Bay this week before coming to Denver, although Washington’s four losses (to the Chargers, Bills, Saints and Chiefs) have all been to quality opponents. QB Taylor Heinicke has been up-and-down with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, while the Washington defense has been getting gashed (423 total yards per game, which ranks 2nd-to-last in the NFL).
