Longshot: how less popular candidates are looking for last-minute support - kwwl.com

DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) - With a total of 11 Democratic candidates still in the race, it will be a struggle for some to meet the 15 percent threshold required to become a viable candidate.

“Get people to go to caucuses that you never thought would go to caucuses,” Senator Amy Klobuchar said. “Get them out there!"

It's an effort to bypass the top four candidates to earn the Democratic nomination. Although unlikely, getting to a top position in the Iowa Caucuses could mean a shot of energy into their campaigns.

Klobuchar was back in Washington on Monday, but was in Des Moines a day earlier stumping for support.

"The people of Iowa understand when I couldn't be here all last week,” Klobuchar said. “I had a job to do. They get that, because I wasn't there. You just have to double down on your work."

Candidate Tom Steyer made himself available to talk with the media Monday afternoon in a final grasp for support. He has failed to break 5 percent in any Iowa-only poll.

"I am looking to get momentum coming out of Iowa,” Steyer said.

Andrew Yang was unable to appear at his Waterloo stop on Sunday, instead Skyping. He held his final caucus rally Saturday in Des Moines.

"It's a thrill to be here this close to voting," Yang said.

Yang was back in the state Monday visiting a Des Moines area precinct ahead of the caucus.

Steyer was remaining optimistic Monday and would not layout plans if he doesn't make it through as a viable candidate.

"Look, all I've been focused on is doing as well as possible and we don't have any plans like that,” Steyer said. “My goal is doing exactly what I'm doing now: making my case to as many Iowans that am the person who can beat President Trump in the fall."
