COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia Police Department gave details about an officer-involved shooting that took place near Nebo Cemetery Road and Highway UU on Feb. 20.
You can watch a previously recorded livestream of the conference in the media player below.
Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones said during the news conference that officers shot at a man named Keith Brodie after a chase the night of Feb. 19 and another chase early in the morning on Feb. 20.
Assistant CPD Chief Jill Schlude said officers were called to the 3700 block of Rollins Road around 8:30 p.m. on the 19th after Brodie was seen at a residence in the area. Schlude included Brodie has an arrest warrant for failing to pay child support.
Officers approached Brodie's truck, he then started his truck and drove away. Schlude said he crashed into an officer at that time. The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Schlude said officers stopped chasing Brody because they couldn't see his truck.
Just after midnight on Feb. 20, Boone County deputies were called to the 6200 block of Southwest Way after Brodie reportedly shot at a man. Deputies started chasing Brodie on Highway K.
Schlude said authorities continued chasing Brodie onto Nebo Cemetery Road. Officers started setting up spike strips on the road.
Police said Brodie turned around and started driving back toward the intersection of Nebo Cemetery and Route UU.
An officer shot at Brodie's vehicle as we was approaching police. Brodie then drove off the side of the road. Schlude said Brodie and a passenger got out of the car and from the vehicle.
Brodie and the other person have not been seen since the chase. Schlude included K-9 units and a helicopter was brought in to assist the search.
CPD Internal Affairs Sgt. Scott Alpers said he is investigating the case. Alpers said the officer who fired at Brodie and another who was at the scene have been placed on paid administrative leave.
Alpers later said Missouri State Highway Patrol investigators are also looking into the case.
This is related to a police chase we previously reported on in the early hours of Feb. 20.
Originally we reported, Jeff Pitts, the Columbia Police Department public information officer, said the incident started as a vehicle chase and ended on Nebo Cemetery Road in Boone County.
ABC 17 News crews saw MUPD, Boone County Sheriff Deputies, Columbia Police and Missouri State Highway Patrol all assisting in this investigation which included visual aid from a helicopter.
