Board members will interview internal candidates before deciding whether an outside search is necessary.
The next superintendent of the Neshaminy School District might already be working there.
School board President Steve Pirritano said a consensus of members have decided to identify and interview internal candidates before considering whether a search for outside candidates is necessary.
He estimated those interviews should be completed by the end of March, at which time the board will either reach a consensus on an internal candidate or start the search for outside ones.
Neshaminy is looking for a new superintendent after Joseph Jones III, the district’s top administrator since August of 2016, announced Jan. 28 that he’s resigning at the end of his current contract on June 30 to return to the classroom as a teacher.
“It’s the desire of the board to look internally for replacement candidates first, and then make a decision from there,” Pirritano said. “We are allowing people from within who have superintendent certificates and are qualified to be a superintendent to apply and then we’ll have interviews.
“If that process yields fruit, we won’t have to do anything else. If not, we’ll go to the next step.”
Pirritano declined to name the internal candidates or how many there are, or to speculate on how likely it is one of them will be the next superintendent.
The ideal situation is to have a permanent replacement named by the time Jones leaves, Pirritano said.
“But if we have to we can always name an interim superintendent to bridge a gap or period of time,” he added. “We’ve done that in the past, and we definitely have people on the staff who can serve on an interim basis if need be.”
Pirritano said that if an outside search becomes necessary, there’s a good chance the district would be contacting the Bucks County Intermediate Unit about doing the search. The IU conducts superintendent searches for county school districts at no charge except for advertising expenses.
The last two Neshaminy superintendents, Jones in 2016 and Robert Copeland in 2012, were hired after IU searches.
Since 2011, IU searches have resulted in new superintendents for 11 county school districts, including two each at Morrisville, Neshaminy, New Hope-Solebury, Pennridge and Pennsbury and one each at Bensalem, Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Centennial, Central Bucks and Council Rock.
Jones, who earns $193,139 a year, said he would like to return to the classroom as a teacher in Philadelphia, if possible, because of the city’s diversity and “access to educational opportunities for the residents of one of this country’s largest cities.”
