Traverse City is working to find ways to maintain their 100% renewable energy goal for future generations.
Traverse City Light and Power has system wide goals of 40% renewable power by 2025 and 100% by 2040. 
The head of Vermont’s Burlington Electric Commission talked to TCLP about how Traverse City can get there too.
“What has worked for Burlington, some of that could work here, some of it might not,” said Gabrielle Stebbins, the chair for the Burlington Electric Commission.
With Burlington already at 100% renewable energy, they continue to do more to be greener.
“It’s all hands on deck at this point in terms of looking at regulatory changes, in terms of looking at incentives, at looking at how do we motivate people to either walk more or drive electric vehicles?” said Stebbins.
Tuesday night, she shared ideas with TCLP.
She says there are tons of ways to tackle this challenge of becoming more energy efficient.
“It’s not easy but we’ve certainly as a society taken on really big challenges in the past and met them,” said Stebbins.
The Traverse City Mayor says their goal of the discussion was to find ways to make sure they continue to stay on the path they’re on and continue to exceed goals.
“Hopefully for the next 10,15, 20, 30 years, we’ll continue on similar routes, staying on the same page and making sure that we are mindful of our environment and mindful of how we choose to exploit our environment or protect it,” said Jim Carruthers, the Traverse City Mayor.
He says he knows everyone realizes how special northern Michigan is and everyone should want to keep it that way.
“We all know that people come here for vacation, move here, want to be here because of the fresh water resource. It’s the air’s cleaner, the environment’s more pure,” said Carruthers.
Carruthers says having Stebbins here has allowed them to learn a lot.
“It’s nice to bring people with like minds, like communities, resources and assets together to sort of talk about these issues,” said Carruthers.
