Essential workers looking to self-isolate can find haven at Linn County Fairgrounds - kwwl.com

LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- Essential workers now have another option for a 'home away from home', should they need a place to self-isolate.

The Linn County Fairgrounds has opened up its campground facilities to anyone considered essential.

The fairgrounds were able to get special permission from the state and county officials after Governor Reynolds closed all recreational campgrounds last week.

Today, was the first day the fairgrounds was accepting campers, while there was no one set up just yet, Linn County Fair Vice President, Jennifer Dunn said someone already reached out after it was announced.

"We don't know if it'll be one or if we're going to have 50 [people]. It's one of those things that we just don't know, but we're able to provide that opportunity," said Dunn.

Right now, the fairgrounds sit empty but the potential campsites could be a safe haven essential workers such as health care providers are looking for.

"I did have a worker at a nearby hospital and is in the E.R. and in her situation, she was looking for someplace to go," said Dunn.

The first caller, a nurse out of Jones County who like many others, is worried about potentially exposing those she lives with.

"In her situation where she was going to potentially be around family members, she was excited about this opporunity and we're happy to house people that need it," said Dunn.

In order to do this, public health officials stipulated it could absolutely not allow people for recreation and offer no public facilities such as bathrooms.

There are, however, water and electrical hook-ups and spots are just $10 a night. There is no deadline to sign-up, but Dunn said they are asking potential campers to reserve a spot online.

"The big thing was this wasn't recreational it's you know, just a spot that someone can go if they need to stay quarantined becuase of the work they're doing," said Dunn.

Dunn said they'll be relying on campers to make sure they're following social distacing guidelines. However, the volunteers would be cognisiant of where they're placing campsites.

Dunn said their goal is to provide some peace of mind for essential workers.

"Knowing that, 'hey I've got my home away from home that I can go stay in, and be away from my family knowing everyone is safe and sound', versus me worrying about did I touch something, did I inhale something? It's one of those things that when it starts to hit home it just makes you think what can we do," said Dunn.

The fairgrounds is allowing campers, motor-homes, and tents.

Volunteers are still working to put on the Linn County Fair, that's currently scheduled for the week of June 24th.
