Sen. Nunn: Looking for the beginning of the end - Des Moines Register

Prime Minister Winston Churchill, on war footing, stated: “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

His words, then, as today, steel the resolve of each of us to do our part, be a force for positive action, and maintain the knowledge that things will get better.

Facing the longest sustained crisis to Iowa’s medical services—from volunteer paramedics to ICU room nurses—combating the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all of us. In Iowa, our medical systems have strained with 1,200 positive cases in our communities.  But heroic first-responders, medical professionals, service providers, cooks, cleaners, clerks and truck drivers have surged forward to ensure our hospitals did not break, and safeguarded that all who are in need received medical attention.

Testing is on-going for individuals with symptoms by calling 2-1-1, and in coordination with your local doctor. In an encouraging indication, we are at the end of the beginning, approximately 13,000 Iowans who showed symptoms of COVID-19 tested negative.

The state is working closely with Iowans to provide relief from the economic damages of the pandemic. A legal information hotline for COVID-19 related civil law matters, like eviction, the denial of unemployment benefits, or employer-employee issues, is available at 1-800-332-0419.

Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa Workforce Development continue to update resources in collaboration with the recent passage of the federal CARES Act. If you or a loved one are in need, I encourage you to visit their websites at https://ift.tt/2V0Kec5 and https://ift.tt/2wuhfUz.

The Iowa Department of Education also released a number of resources for families to support learning at home during this period. Those can be found at https://ift.tt/3edo5i0.

Iowans have always been strong, especially in the face of difficulty and challenge. All over our state, Iowans have been stepping up to help each other and bring each other comfort. Facing uncertainty is hard, but we are all in this together. We will get through this, and when we do, our state will be even stronger. If you have questions, concerns or need anything else, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Thank you fellow Iowans. It is a difficult road to recovery, but with our sense of hard work and community, we will soon find ourselves at the beginning of the end.
