Crisis House, the nonprofit in El Cajon that must vacate its premises on Magnolia Avenue by the end of the year, has found a partner who will match funds until the end of this month toward its work in securing a new home.
In July, the El Cajon City Council unanimously voted to give Crisis House until Dec. 31 to leave the building in order to receive a $700,000 early termination incentive payment from the city.
Crisis House has been in that spot for 26 years and has been serving East County victims of domestic violence, as well as providing homeless services to those in need, for more than 50 years.
The David C. Copley Foundation has pledged a challenge grant whereby the foundation will match one dollar for every one dollar raised up to $250,000 toward the purchase and related relocation expenses.
“Being asked to leave by the city is what kind of compelled them to step up, to offer this matching challenge,” said Crisis House CEO Mary Case. “They’re trying to help us open mortgage-free. This is all new territory for us. We’ve never had to pay rent before.”
Case said Crisis House has identified a building, but gave no other details. She said that with the $700,000 the city is providing, the Copley Foundation “knew we wouldn’t be able to buy a place for that amount, that it would be closer to $1.2 million.”
She said the parties talked about the financial gap and they said, ‘We’ll put up $250,000 as a matching challenge grant and if you raise the $250,000, we’ll give you the other $250,000.’ ”
Kim Koch, CEO for the Copley Foundation, said that the nonprofit looks for organizations “that can make life better for the people they support,” and said that the essential services Crisis House provides to East County need to continue uninterrupted.
“We’re worried about the impact that (the move) will have on a very vulnerable population,” Koch said. “And on top of that, Crisis House having to relocate and having to find a building, especially during a pandemic, is difficult. And so much more so for a nonprofit on a budget. It’s imperative that we help them.”

“We urgently need to be out of the building by Dec. 31; we need to make this happen,” Case said.
A new space will ensure access to crucial resources in a confidential setting, she said, and “plays a critical role in planning for a future of positive impact over the next 50 years.”
The group annually provides urgent and direct emergency transitional and permanent housing with wrap-around services for 145 families, including 312 children, fleeing domestic violence.
El Cajon City Manager Graham Mitchell said the city has an offer on the Magnolia building. Mitchell would not divulge more details but said, “We’re excited about the potential user.”
