Justin Dawe took a look at his next opponent and didn’t flinch. His finals opponent Sunday for the men’s senior novice super heavyweight title, Danny McCalls, will outweigh him by nearly 50 pounds.
“I’m used to fighting bigger guys,” said Dawe, 22, who weighed 230 for his victory over Cam Hendon on Saturday at the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves tournament. “We’re going to put some pressure on him, see how he handles it and work the body. I feel comfortable. I feel strong.”
His victory over Hendon was one of the highlights of Saturday’s second-round action at the George Gervin Wellness Center.
About 300 fans braved near-freezing temperatures outside and COVID-19 restrictions inside to see 22 bouts, mostly in the men’s senior novice division for boxers 18 and older with fewer than 10 bouts on their résumé.
McCalls, part of the Dead Game boxing team from Austin, defeated Dawe’s stalemate at Ranadzzo’s Boxing Gym, Paul Chavera, to set up Sunday’s showdown.
McCalls, 28, appearing in just his second bout, weighed 282.5 on Saturday, 285 for his bout Friday.
There were other highlight moments for Sam Randazzo’s team Saturday. One was a 152-pound senior novice battle between stablemates Nashaun Richardson and Derek Phillips.
Richardson, a southpaw, dropped Phillips in the third round with a beautiful 1-2 combination in Phillips’ corner that may have been the difference in the fight.
Richardson won a unanimous decision.
“It was pretty awkward fighting someone from my own gym,” said Richardson, 21, who moved to San Antonio a year ago from California and works at a gas station. “I had a lot of respect for my opponent.”
“I know his fighting style, but I wasn’t used to the one-minute rounds so I knew I had to rush in and be busy,” Phillips said. “But I think I rushed a little too much.”
Novice division fighters box three, one-minute rounds. Open division fighters box three, two-minute rounds.
In other bouts, Sylvestre Quinones advanced to the finals at 152 in one of just two men’s senior open bouts for fighters with 10 or more bouts.
“I had the flu and strep throat that same week but I fought anyway,” said Quinones of Johnson City, who trains in San Antonio at Last Chance Ministries’ Gladiators Boxing. “I would have liked to have fought (Moreno) again.”
Jeremy Cruz, 25, of Scribner Boxing in San Antonio won his sub-novice debut at 178 pounds with a second-round stoppage of Jack Hogan of Wesley Boxing and Fitness.
The finals are scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday. All bouts are streamed live at sanantoniogoldengloves.org.
