Open Squash Aguadulce: Varela Looking Forward To Playing At Home - Professional Squash Association - PSA World Tour

The Open Squash Aguadulce takes place in Mijas Costa, Spain this week, with Hugo Varela being the top seed for the Challenger 5 level’s men’s event.

Like the majority of tournaments currently being held on the PSA Challenger Tour, this event has restrictions on entries. The Open Squash Aguadulce is a domestic-only event, meaning that only players residing in Spain could enter.

The 16-strong draw features 14 Spaniards playing on home soil, with a pair of Colombians, in Luis Alejandro Mancilla and Andres Villamizar, also in action.

Hugo Varela is the top seed for the tournament, and we spoke to him this week ahead of the event. The Spaniard explained how he was able to keep his workload up despite the pandemic.

“In these such weird times, any tournament coming up feels so good. I haven’t stopped at all since the pandemic started in March 2020 but I’ve obviously had to make many adjustments in my preparation because the squash courts were closed a couple of times but I’ve stayed pretty motivated to be honest,” he explained.

“So any tournament coming up, for me is a great opportunity to show off how all the work that Ive been putting in and to try to keep climbing up on the rankings.”

“There is no way possible to simulate the tension or intensity that comes up in competition during preparation, so I’m trying to prepare the best way possible to be 100% for the tournament. It really is a bit frustrating to not have many tournaments.

“For example for me I felt I was playing my best by December winning a 5k and then you have to wait a couple of months to play again, losing all the momentum.

“Playing at home feels great, specially travelling to southerm Spain, where I have so many friends. The weather is amazing and they always run great tournaments. I’m really looking forward to being in Almeria and to play my best squash.”

The event takes place from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 at the Club Nautico de Aguadulce, where Hugo Varela is the top seed for the tournament. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates from the event.
