Meteorological vs. astronomical: Looking ahead to signs of spring - KTTC

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Monday, March 1, marks the start of meteorological spring.

And while temperatures felt rather chilly, much warmer spring-like weather is on the way for the rest of the week; a sure sign that spring is around the corner.

"Well, in Minnesota when I think of spring, it's like freedom finally where we can get outside and enjoy the weather," said Rochester resident Janna Galbreath. "I'm a huge advocate for being outside every day."

"The longer days, the sunlight, the just being able to get out," said Rochester resident Theresa Hurne.

Whether you are a Rochester local or from out of state, spring has most of us thinking about nature and getting outside.

"Well, when I think of spring, I think of robins, I think of flowers," said Beverly Knutson. "I have a greenhouse at home that I'm going to start seeds in."

"I think of yard work, cutting grass and cleaning up, and just getting ready to enjoy the summertime," said Bob Graham, who's visiting Rochester from Crystal Springs, Mississippi.

While Monday is the start of metrological spring, there is actually a different astronomical start to spring as well. So what's the difference?

Meteorological spring starts on March 1 and ends on May 31. It's based on temperature changes. Astronomical spring starts on the March equinox which is typically around March 20. That date is determined by the angle of the sun's rays hitting the earth.

"Fun, family, events, things you can go out to in the open instead of being closed in all the time," said Rochester resident Edward Milner.

But no matter when you consider the start of the blossoming season to be, we all have something we are looking forward to.

"There's a lot of trails around Rochester and southeastern Minnesota and we just really live in a great part of the state," said Rochester resident Sue McKinley. "So I'm really looking forward to getting my bike and enjoying the scenery."

"Pickleball," Knutson, Hurne, and McKinley said together. "When it gets above 50 then we play pickleball, as long as there isn't any snow on the court."

"Baseball season will be starting,' Graham said. "Hopefully the stands will be full. And I'm ready for life to get back to normal."
