Triopia Community Unit School District 27 is considering expanding the northwestern portion of its building to create a new elementary school office with a secure entrance.
Superintendent Adam Dean said the district has been looking at the project for some time after working with a security professional that identified the lack as a potential weakness.
“We had a security guy come out and he worked with us on our policies, procedures, and he looked at our buildings,” Dean said. “There is some concern with the location of our grade school offices.”
Parents visiting the elementary school now are buzzed in through the secure entrance on the high school end of the building, but that means they have to travel past classrooms to reach the elementary school offices in the center of the building.
The district’s architect has drawn up a plan and estimates it would cost between $300,000 and $400,000 to build the addition, Dean said.
The new section would hold the offices of the elementary school secretary and principal, as well as a conference room for the district.
“We don’t really have an adequate meeting space in the building, so we could include that in an addition,” Dean said.
The project is being discussed by one of the board’s subcommittees before being brought before the board for a decision.
The work could be done without place any additional burden on taxpayers, Dean said.
The district has access to funds through its reserves, the 1-cent sales tax and potential grant money that would help cover the cost of the expansion.
“This isn’t something that would drain our reserves down to zero and we hope we can use some stimulus money to help cover the cost,” Dean said. “We are in the process of talking about this and it is something that we probably need to do. We are just trying to get our ducks in a row.”
