Penguins looking for power forward? — The Fourth Period - The Fourth Period

The Pittsburgh Penguins do not have the deepest prospect pool and no longer own their first-round, third-round and fourth-round draft picks in the 2021 NHL Draft, so their bag of tradable assets isn’t deep. But that isn’t going to stop GM Ron Hextall from trying to add a player or two ahead of Monday’s 3pm ET trade deadline.

Hextall is believed to be in the market for a physical power forward and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has listed five players the team could target: Sam Bennett, Nick Foligno, Scott Laughton, David Backes and Erik Haula.

Bennett is set to become a restricted free agent this off-season and has been a player the Calgary Flames appear willing to trade. The paper suggests he could be a solid add to Pittsburgh’s bottom-six.

Foligno is a player TFP reported being on Pittsburgh’s radar [view video], but the price is high and the Penguins might not be able to afford him.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are believed to be looking for a first-round pick as part of a deal for Foligno, and considering the Penguins do not have their pick in this summer’s draft, Hextall is unlikely to move his first rounder in 2022.

Laughton and the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to finalize a contract extension. Failing that, the team could move him by the deadline and Hextall is certainly familiar with the player.

Backes’ best days are behind him and while Haula is playing on Nashville and helping the Predators battle for a playoff spot in the Central Division, the asking price is not believed to be overly significant.

The Penguins are not expected to make a big splash today or Monday, but some cosmetic changes could be in the cards for Hextall.
