Amazon is looking to get its hands on MGM in major buyout - Poc Network

MGM has been looking for a buyer since the end of last year and it might have finally found one. Amazon and MGM appear to be in talks to purchase MGM for an estimated $9 billion (subject to change as new information rolls in).

Amazon is already one of the largest entities out there, meaning this would heavily expand upon the content the company would have exclusive rights to. MGM has been behind some incredibly iconic film franchises, such as James Bond, Rocky, and Robocop. Not only that but additional properties as well would be included. Such as Epix, which is a broadcast television network that offers its own online streaming portal as well.

Back in 2013, MGM signed over exclusive licensing rights to hundreds of its titles to Starz. MGM then found itself buried in difficulties with understanding the terminology behind “exclusive”, resulting in Starz eventually suing MGM last year (May 2020) as listed titles kept getting found on other streaming platforms and networks.

This purchase would result in one of the biggest upgrades Amazon has made for itself if approved and it will save MGM from the mess it got itself into with Starz. Given, there is no information on how this will affect Starz in the future, but it will likely end the relationship and shift exclusivity over to Amazon.

Nothing is set in stone or announced by either company yet. Discussions like this happen all of the time when a company like this is on the market looking for potential buyers. So, although Amazon and MGM are in talks today, this could change tomorrow.
