A top Iranian official claimed that his country is looking for an excuse to attack Israel.
Mohsen Rezaee, a leading Iranian politician and adviser to leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in an interview that there was “no doubt” that Iran is actively looking for an excuse to attack Israel and would if the United States gives it a “pretext” to do so.
“We would raze Tel Aviv to the ground for sure. We have been looking for such a pretext,” Rezaee said, according to a translation from the Middle East Media Research Group. “If they [the U.S.] do something, we can use it as a pretext to attack Israel.”
The 65-year-old adviser is also a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. In the same interview, Rezaee, who was speaking to a Hezbollah-affiliated media group, claimed that Israel “played a role” in the U.S. operation that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Soleimani was killed last month when a U.S. drone targeted the vehicle he was in outside Baghdad’s airport. Soleimani was the leader of the Quds Force, an elite special operations unit of the Guard, and he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops during the Iraq War.
Despite Rezaee’s comments, Gen. David Petraeus recently said that Iran and Hezbollah are unlikely to risk sparking a major conflict with Israel, given the excessive force from both Israel and the U.S. that would follow.
“Iran will not risk a major war because it would put its survival at risk,” Petraeus said.
Soleimani’s death created a structural vacuum within the Quds Force, which coordinates and directs Iranian-aligned militia groups across the Middle East. U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook said that Soleimani’s successor, Gen. Esmail Ghaani, would meet “ the same fate” as Soleimani if he continued his legacy.
