WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (KOLO) - With programs in science, healthy living, civic engagement and more, children learn about life skills which helps them gain confidence, creativity and curiosity.
4-H program manager Sarah Chvilicek said there are many project opportunities offered to cultivate those interests, which you can help be a part of.
"We've had a lots of research that was done that with young people that are involved with the 4-H developmental program are more likely to be successful than their peers," said Chvilicek "Because of that engagement and experiential learning opportunity."
With an increased learning for cooking and sewing, Washoe County is looking for 4-H leaders for home arts and science.
Joelle Mackay was part of 4-H as a child.
Her passion grew to inspiration and she is now the 4-H community based instructor for Washoe County.
"I feel that when we help the youth in our community, we are a beacon of pathway to a brighter future for them and possibilities of knowledge, experience and growing," explained Mackay.
Mackay said it's a rewarding feeling when club leaders get to see the accomplishments of our youth through state and even national competitions.
"Whether it be photography or sculpting, they can expand their knowledge and the volunteers help them experience that," added Mackay.
While there is no limit on volunteers needed, Chvilicek said all you need is an interest in helping kids.
"Anyone interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer, we're eager to talk to them," Chvilicek added. "It can be a short term project for only a few months, a year, or year round. We tailor it to the volunteer's needs."
