Bradley University looking at program cuts, reallocation of resources - WEEK - week.com

Bradley University is re-thinking the programs offered as they go through what they call a prioritization process.

For the past year and half, Bradley has been analyzing their 169 educational programs to match dollars to students.

A memo sent to full-time faculty from the Provost details recommendations for cuts.

Programs potentially on the chopping block at Bradley include physics, theater, and three of the six majors in the family and consumer science program (retail merchandising, family and consumer science and the teaching degree in family and consumer science).

If their program is dropped though, a student would still be able to complete their degrees if they are pursing it currently.

Still, students are filled with emotions.

"Tears started coming down, we just thought it was so unfair." said Mia Katz, a junior theater major at Bradley.

Statistics of enrolled students from this fall provided by Bradley show 11 physics majors, 41 theater majors and 24 students majoring in the three family and consumer science concentrations, a total of 76 students.

"It affects morale I think if anything. Being told that you're not as valuable as something else. Theater is what I've built my life around, I have no back up plan, this has to work for me and there's going to be people in the future that this will have to work for and the fact that it's possible that Bradley isn't going to be an option for that anymore is really upsetting." said Katz

The provost also recommends the merging of programs and elimination of specific concentrations in mechanical engineering.

The university said they have to put their money into the programs that bring new students to Peoria.

"We have to reallocate some of our resources. We have to make these changes so that we continue to be sustainable and so that we are relevant and we are on the leading edge of what our students want and what prospective students are looking for." said executive director of public relations, Renee Charles

Meanwhile, in the opposite direction, the school will bolster some programs that have demonstrated particular strength for more funding. Those include nursing, interactive media, mechanical engineering, counseling, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, psychology and education.

It is unknown right now how many faculty members would be impacted, but the university said that tenured faculty will keep their jobs. They would be kept on staff to teach courses in the core curriculum or other classes in the field needed by majors in a different department.

The students said their professors are trying to be hopeful and the students have started a petition.

"They've been holding up. They're strong, they tell us nothing is set in stone and that we're going to fight like hell for this and we're going to rally." said Katz

The school plans to have two open houses to answer questions and said any final decision would involve a lengthy, multi-stop process involving approval from the school’s board of trustees. Eliminating majors also requires the OK of the faculty senate.
