Looking for a good Democratic candidate? Think Cuomo - Boston Herald

Democrats would be a whole lot better off if Andrew Cuomo were their nominee for president.

While it may be too late to derail frontrunner Joe Biden, a candidate bent on self-destruction, Cuomo, the governor of New York, has shown the nation what it means to be a leader in a time of crisis.

While Biden may be ahead in Democratic convention delegates, he is behind when it comes to charisma and confidence. Cuomo has no delegates, but he oozes both, just as his father, Mario Cuomo, did.

Cuomo, 62, has become a commanding, confident and reassuring presence on the national scene as he deals with the coronavirus that has devastated New York.

Biden, 77, meanwhile, has become almost irrelevant since campaigning has come to a halt. To remain politically alive, Biden has built a television studio in the basement of his Wilmington, Del., home where he streams out appearances and conducts interviews.

But they have not gone over well because he often loses his train of thought, slurs his words and utters strange and often incoherent remarks.

Biden also echoes the mean-spirited anti-Trump remarks of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer over the president’s efforts to combat the virus but, like them, has offered nothing constructive.

In a coronavirus appearance on “The Five,” a confused Biden said, “We have to take care of the cure. That will make the problem worse, no matter what, no matter what.”

Besides what appears to be a slowdown in his thought process, the former vice president has no standing in the battle against the coronavirus. He holds no office. And while he is the frontrunner in the Democratic race for the party nomination, he is not yet the official Democratic candidate for president. Also, he still has yet to get Bernie Sanders to throw in the towel.

While Cuomo cannot compete with President Trump when it comes to dominating the news with daily briefings on the national war against the deadly virus, Cuomo does a pretty good job of holding his own.

Already a Draft Cuomo 2020 Twitter account has been set up to substitute Cuomo for Biden.

Cuomo, who is not a candidate, would be the longest of longshots to replace Biden, even in the strange times we live in. Yet he can see a crack of daylight, even though he has no organization and no delegates.

While Biden has 1,217 delegates committed to him at the upcoming August convention —compared to 914 for Bernie Sanders — the former vice president must get 1,991 of the almost 4,000 delegates to vote for him on the first ballot to win the nomination.

This presumes that the convention, slated for Milwaukee, is, as a result of the health crisis, even held.

If Biden does not win on the first ballot, all those delegates are free to vote for whomever they want on a second or on subsequent ballots. Also, there are 771 uncommitted super delegates who are also eligible to vote after the first ballot.

So, there is a possibility — remote as it is at this point — that should Biden fail to win the nomination on the first ballot at a contested convention, the delegates could get behind another candidate.

That candidate could be Cuomo.

Cuomo is not only attracting support from lukewarm Biden supporters who believe Biden cannot beat Trump, but also from Democrats who voted for Trump in 2016.

Cuomo has a way of connecting with voters on television that few politicians have, including Trump.

While Trump comes across as blunt, cold and crude — even when delivering good news — Cuomo is smooth, warm and understanding. Trump talks to you like your boss, Cuomo talks to you like your brother.

He relates to people when he talks about family and the importance of caring for one another. He warmly quotes his grandfather, his father Mario, the late governor of New York, mentions his children, his brother and his sisters.

When he issued a list of anti-coronavirus health guidelines, he called it “Matilda’s Law,” after his mother.

He is not running. Maybe he should.
