Nets' Spencer Dinwiddie looking to play for Nigeria in Olympics - New York Post

Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is planning to acquire a Nigerian passport to play for Nigeria in the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, according to The Athletic.

Dinwiddie, who was not among the 44 players who were announced as finalists for spots on Team USA, can be eligible to play for Nigeria if he is successful in his quest for a passport. He confirm The Athletic’s report with a simple reply on his Twitter page.

“Well now y’all know lol,” Dinwiddie tweeted.

The Southern California native did not elaborate on why Nigeria was his choice, but Dinwiddie would join a team that has already qualified for the Olympics after finishing as the top African squad in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The Nigerian team is coached by Golden State Warriors assistant and former NBA head coach Mike Brown. Team Nigeria will include NBA players such as Orlando forward Al-Farouq Aminu, Minnesota Timberwoves forward Josh Okogie, Josh Okogie, Ekpe Udoh and Cimezie Metu.

Dinwiddie, who turned 27 on April 6, was having his best pro season before the NBA shut down play over the coronavirus pandemic, averaging 20.6 points per game and a career high average in assists (6.8 per game) and rebounds (3.5 per contest). Dinwiddie finished 10th in All-Star voting for Eastern Conference guards.
