New Yorkers may be looking at a shutdown into much of May, NYC mayor says - MarketWatch

New Yorkers should be prepared to continue social distancing and having nonessential businesses closed through April and into much of May, Mayor Bill de Blasio said from City Hall on Thursday.

New York City began its lockdown in mid-March, closing schools, museums, theaters and restaurants and bars. By March 20, Gov. Andrew Cuomo had announced New York state’s PAUSE executive order, now in effect until April 29, at least.

“All of [the measures] have proven necessary,” the mayor said. “And all of them will be with us, certainly in my view, through April and into I think, for much of May.”

Positive statistics have begun to emerge in the city’s fight against the virus, such as lower-than-predicted ventilator use and a stabilizing in the number of new hospitalizations for respiratory illness. “We are flattening the curve by what we are doing, and we’re flattening the curve so far,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday. “This is all a direct consequence to our actions, if we stop acting the way we’re acting you will see those numbers go up.”

In New York City, which has emerged as the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. in part due to its high-density population, 80,204 people have tested positive for the virus and 4,260 people had died as of Wednesday evening, according to the city’s department of health.

“Obviously we have a long way to go,” de Blasio said. “This is going to be a long battle, a tough battle.”

“April and May are when we have to win this phase, push back this disease. We have to fight for it,” de Blasio said.

Restrictions can be adjusted when there’s “real evidence” of improvement, but they could also be increased if adherence to social distancing begins to wane, he warned.

“If we don’t do it right, or if this horrible, ferocious virus hits us in some new way, restrictions might have to go up, meaning if things really get worse, we might have to tighten up further,” de Blasio said. “It’s not what I envision today, it’s not what any of us want.”

“We will not jump the gun, unless we have sustained hard evidence that things are getting better we will not relax any of the tough standards, the restrictions, in place now,” he said.
