Either you have one or you don’t, and if you don’t you keep looking until you find one. The Giants have one and so they will not be looking for a quarterback in this year’s draft. Taking one, in any of the seven rounds, appears highly unlikely.
As of now, there are three quarterbacks on the roster, and as long as the name Daniel Jones sits atop the list, there is not much reason for discussion when it comes to the Giants and this most critical position. Behind him, veteran backup Colt McCoy was brought in via free agency and Alex Tanney remains on the scene, at least for now.
Jones turns 23 on May 27 and his rookie year was filled with evidence he can be the worthy successor to Eli Manning, in terms of comportment, demeanor and an ability to throw the heck out of the football. Jones is more athletic, though, and was far more advanced in his first year than Manning was as a rookie in 2004.
If the Giants could do it all over, they would again select Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, a franchise-altering decision that at the time was stunning, considering many draft analysts viewed Jones as a good-but-not-great prospect. Former head coach Pat Shurmur was fully on board with the pick initiated by general manager Dave Gettleman, and now, in Year 2, Jones faces the difficult reality of a new head coach, Joe Judge, and the need to learn an entirely new offensive system installed by coordinator Jason Garrett. Manning had the luxury of playing in essentially the same offense for the first 10 years of his NFL career.
Jones must cut down on his turnovers. His interceptions (12 in 459 pass attempts) were more than acceptable. His fumbles (18 in 13 games, including 11 fumbles lost) were not at all acceptable.
McCoy, 33, is a 10-year veteran with 28 career starts and he knows the NFC East well after six years with the Redskins. He is well-versed in the art of supporting younger teammates and should fit nicely. Tanney, 32, had his option picked up and will try to convince the new coaching regime he has value running the scout team and as a behind-the-scenes aid to Jones.
