While Night on the Town didn’t leave downtown Loveland as the pandemic hit, much changed. Now, the downtown district is looking to 2021 as a move back toward normalcy.
Abby Powell, events and partnerships manager for the Loveland Downtown District, said that while the monthly event did not stop happening across the downtown area, it looked much different than years prior. With live music gone, restaurants serving fewer customers and fewer people coming to downtown, Powell said a lot changed.
“We really had to modify that last summer,” she said.
Businesses in the downtown area, like many others, experienced hardships throughout the pandemic, including the much quieter Night on the Towns.
“Through the pandemic Night on the Town was way less attended,” said Dana Brungardt, owner of B Sweet Cupcakes at 425 E. Fourth St. “We normally would stay open until 8 or 9 and through 2020 we just wouldn’t stay open (that late).”
Brungardt said the height of the pandemic was especially tough for her business, as B Sweet Cupcakes makes treats for weddings, birthdays, graduations and other occasions that were not happening as much last year.
Kim Dietrich, front of house manager of AKA Kitchen at 414 E. Sixth St., said the restaurant was able to make it through the height of the pandemic because of ownership and the support of the community.
“The restaurant is run and owned by a wonderful family, so that was instrumental to (our) success and (our) survival,” Dietrich said. “They were able to pull together the family and keep the business open.”
But as Loveland and the county as a whole have begun to open up more in 2021, especially with the impacts of the Level Up system, which now allows restaurants to open at 100% capacity with proper spacing, Night on the Town is returning to some level of normalcy.
With three monthly events on the books this year, Powell said the changes in the community have allowed for Night on the Town to look a bit more like it did before the pandemic. She said the event allows for people to go out on a Friday night and explore more than they would normally.
“It brings us hope,” Powell said. “It is nice to have a feeling that life is coming back to our downtown and those first three Nights on the Town were evidence of that.”
She also said the city is hoping to bring live music back for Night on the Town starting in May.
For April’s Night on the Town a number of bars, restaurants and local shops will, like in years past, be offering deals, live music, special drinks and more.
B Sweet Cupcakes, which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary Friday, will be offering deals, a chance to win a $25 gift certificate and live music.
Brungardt said that events like Night on the Town bring more exposure to community members who may not know some downtown businesses even exist.
“There is a combination of all the businesses working together to drive traffic into downtown, which helps everybody,” she said.
AKA Kitchen will be having prime rib night for hungry Loveland customers. Dietrich said all the meat is hand-crusted with a special blend by chefs in house.
She said the restaurant staff is excited to have more people come out and discover AKA Kitchen Friday night, as they have worked hard to give good service and happiness during a difficult time. She, like Brungardt, said events like Night on the Town serve as a way to give exposure to companies off the beaten path.
“They are crucial opportunities to encourage people to try new places; to travel downtown (beyond) just that main (downtown) strip,” Dietrich said, later adding, “the help of Night on the Town is awesome because it encourages people to try new places and venture out.”
