Broncos gassers following loss to Chiefs, looking ahead to Week 14 versus Lions - The Denver Post

Gassers and a look ahead following the Broncos’ loss to the Chiefs in Week 13 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Gassers

Vic Fangio

The third-year Broncos coach failed his prime-time test against the Chiefs, falling to 0-5 against the divisional rival. Even though the Broncos defense played decently enough to keep Denver in the game, Fangio remains inept with the challenge flag. After a failed challenge on an incomplete pass to Travis Kelce in the second quarter, Fangio is 1-for-6 on challenges in 2021 and 4-for-14 since 2019.

Teddy Bridgewater

In the Broncos’ biggest game of 2021, their quarterback turned in his worst performance of the season. Bridgewater had a season-low rating, tossing a third-quarter interception to Juan Thornhill as well as a fourth-quarter pick-six to Daniel Sorensen. At least Bridgewater threw a shoulder into Sorensen on a failed tackle, unlike his no-tackle attempt on Darius Slay’s pick-six in Week 10 against the Eagles.

Broncos special teams

Another week, another glaring mistake by one of Tom McMahon’s units. This Sunday, it was a muffed punt by Diontae Spencer on the final play of the third quarter. Kansas City gunner Byron Pringle blocked Caden Sterns into Spencer right as the punt arrived, and Pringle recovered at the Denver 16. The Chiefs got a field goal out of it to go ahead 16-3, a decisive swing of momentum against Denver.

Looking ahead

Sunday vs. Lions, 2:05 p.m.

Record: 1-10-1

Week 13 result: Won 29-27 vs. Minnesota.

Coach: Dan Campbell (1st year).

About the Lions: It’s been another rough season in Detroit, which is cruising to a fourth straight last-place finish in the NFC North and is currently in the lead for the No. 1 draft pick in 2022. But the Lions are coming off their first win of the season, as quarterback Jared Goff’s 11-yard touchdown pass to wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown beat the Vikings on the final play of the game. Detroit is winless on the road this season, although the Lions tied the Steelers at Heinz Field in Week 10. Goff’s first season with the Lions has been subpar. The former No. 1 overall pick by the Rams has thrown 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions with an 88.1 rating.
