PHILADELPHIA – Eagles offensive lineman Nate Herbig was standing on the sideline, watching center Jason Kelce jogging up and down the MetLife Stadium sidelines last Sunday, trying to see if his injured knee would hold up to finish the rest of the game against the Giants.
Herbig had to fill in for Kelce, who did not play for most of the first half because of the injury. Things had not gone smoothly for Herbig at center because the third-year lineman had been called for two holding penalties, one of which resulted in a Boston Scott touchdown run being called back.
However, Herbig was reinserted into the game once Kelce returned. This time, Herbig was playing right guard, filling in for Jack Driscoll, who was carted off the field with an ankle injury. Herbig played well at guard, but the Eagles lost 13-7.
Now, with Driscoll on injured reserve and out for the season and uncertainty surrounding the status of Brandon Brooks, Herbig is set to start Sunday’s game against the Jets at right guard. It will be a welcome chance for Herbig to redeem himself, especially after his performance at center.
Herbig said knowing that he can play one position instead of preparing to back up several spots on the offensive line will be beneficial.
“I think I can just focus more on just one spot and really lock in and try to be as detailed as possible,” Herbig said. “But if I’m playing all three spots, then you have to compartmentalize. When I play center, it is different call-wise than a guard. Which way the play is going and just being on it also matters. It is just all of those little things.”
Herbig also said that playing right guard is natural for him because it is a position that he has played for most of his life. However, Herbig said he was willing to play wherever offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland needed him, including center.
“I kind of do that practice already, but it’s just two different positions or different mindsets,” Herbig said. “I feel like I just tried to put myself in the best situation to help the team win and do my job and execute it whether it’s at center or guard.”
Since the Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Herbig has started in 13 games, playing both guards and center. Herbig’s versatility has made him a valuable option for the Eagles.
One reason why Herbig tries to invest as much time as he can into getting better is that he does not want to let his teammates down. Herbig pointed to some of the veteran linemen, stating they have been instrumental in ensuring he is being kept up to date on the calls and the importance of his role with the team.
“I think it’s just a credit to Kelce, Lane (Johnson), Brooks and Isaac (Seumalo), and Stout,” Herbig said. “With the standard that has been set since I got to the Eagles, you don’t know when your numbers going to get called, but you better be ready because everyone is counting on each other. You better be ready to play because you don’t know when it’s going to happen or what’s going to happen. As you have seen, there has been a lot of shuffling over the years that I’ve been here.”
With Herbig back in his natural spot at right guard, the Eagles should still succeed along the offensive line. It will be interesting to see how well Kelce’s knee can hold up Sunday. If Kelce’s knee is good enough to be effective, Herbig can play at a high level, using his power to push defenders off the line in the run game while still being an adequate pass protector.
