Adrian Peterson's didn't spend long looking for his second team of the 2021 NFL season. The 36-year-old running back was released by the Titans on Nov. 23 but just over a week later, he signed with the Seahawks' practice squad.
On the surface, this was a strange-looking move. Peterson waited for an opportunity to get a crack at the lead-back role with the Titans, a team that was viewed as one of the AFC's top contenders.
The Seahawks are the complete opposite of that. They are sitting at 3-8 on the season and almost certainly won't make the playoffs, barring a miraculous run to close the season.
So, why did the Seahawks sign Peterson? It boiled down to a couple of key reasons for the Seahawks.

Why did the Seahawks sign Adrian Peterson?
Largely, the Seahawks signed Peterson because they haven't fielded an effective running game this season. Top running back Chris Carson is out for the season with a neck injury and his backups — Alex Collins, Deejay Dallas, Rashaad Penny and Travis Homer — have combined to average just 3.9 yards per carry this season.
So, the Seahawks are looking for a player that can be a bit more effective and can help the team string together some wins. Pete Carroll believes that could be Peterson.
"We're trying to get ready to win this football game," Carroll said, per ESPN. "So I'm going to see if Adrian has got something to offer us. Just in his presence and his toughness, he brings something. So let's see what happens. We're just trying to get the right mix. Rashaad's been in and out. We've been concerned about him getting back and staying back. Homer has been banged up and we're not sure about him this week either. So it just looks like there's some opportunities.
"So we'll see how it goes and see how the guys respond. I'm as excited as probably you guys are just to see what he looks like playing in our uniform and doing something for us, so we'll see how it goes."

As Carroll noted, the Seahawks have dealt with injuries beyond that of Carson this season. Peterson will come in with relatively fresh legs, though there's no guarantee he'll be an upgrade after averaging just 3.0 yards per carry with the Titans.
Still, Carroll believes that Peterson can give the team "a little something" as they look to snap out of a three-game losing skid.
"Excited to see if he can help us out and give us a little something," Carroll said of Peterson. "He's a player that I've known forever — way back to his high-school days — and admired him tremendously over the years. Always disappointed we didn't get him back in the day, but like I just told him, we finally got him. So I'm looking forward to seeing how he does and where he can fit in. He's an incredible competitor and a great guy, so I'm anxious to give him a chance to get on the field with our boys."

Peterson will get a chance to prove Carroll right in Week 13 against the 49ers. The Seahawks have called him up from the practice squad and are planning on giving him opportunities to carry the ball against their divisional rival.
